Instructions

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients - Start by slicing the onion, tomatoes, and iceberg lettuce. Set them aside for assembly later.
  • Step 2: Sauté the Onions - In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Step 3: Cook the Beef - Add the ground beef to the skillet with the onions. Season with kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Use your spatula to break the beef into small pieces as it cooks. Cook until the beef is fully browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Step 4: Melt the Cheese - Once the beef is cooked, layer the slices of American cheese over the beef mixture. Cover the skillet for a couple of minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  • Step 5: Prepare the Hoagie Buns - While the cheese is melting, slice the hoagie buns in half. In a separate skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter and lightly toast the insides of the buns until golden brown.
  • Step 6: Assemble the Sandwich - Spread mayonnaise and ketchup (if using) on the toasted buns. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top with lettuce and tomato slices. Place the top half of the bun over the fillings.
  • Step 7: Serve Immediately - Cut the sandwiches in half if desired, and serve them hot. Enjoy your delectable Chopped Cheese Sandwich!
