Ingredients

  • 1 can (6-ounce) pineapple juice
  • ½ cup rice vinegar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the pineapple juice, rice vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, and soy sauce. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally to help dissolve the brown sugar.
  • In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and the water until smooth. This will help prevent clumps when you add it to the sauce.
  • Once the sauce is simmering, slowly pour in the cornstarch mixture while whisking continuously. This will thicken the sauce to your desired consistency. Continue to cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the sauce is glossy and thick.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sauce cool. Once it’s at room temperature, transfer it to an airtight container. Your Homemade Sweet and Sour Sauce is now ready to use!

Equipment

  • Medium Saucepan
  • Whisk

  • Small Bowl

Notes

  • For a soy-free version, substitute soy sauce with coconut aminos.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more brown sugar or honey if desired.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
